Brushed silver built up letters mounted on a brick building by MW Graphics

Materials and Finishes

Built up letters can be fabricated in a range of materials and finishes, including:

  • Aluminium

  • Acrylic

  • Stainless steel

  • Powder-coated finishes in any RAL colour

  • Brushed or polished metal effects

Material choice comes down to the building, the environment and the look you're after. A brushed stainless finish suits a corporate entrance; powder-coated aluminium in a brand colour works harder on a retail frontage. We'll advise at survey stage.

Illuminated and Non-Illuminated Lettering

Letters can be supplied non-illuminated, or built with integrated lighting:

  • Halo illumination, where LEDs behind the letters throw a glow onto the wall for a premium, architectural effect

  • Face illumination, where the letter faces themselves light up for maximum visibility

  • Internal LED lighting, built into the letters during fabrication for clean lines and low running costs

Illuminated lettering keeps your premises visible after dark and through winter trading hours, without the maintenance demands of older lighting systems.

Fabricated In-House, Fitted by Our Own Team

Because we fabricate built up letters ourselves rather than buying them in, we control proportions, spacing, fixings and finish from the start. Every project begins with accurate measurements and scaled visuals against a photograph of your actual building, so you approve exactly how the lettering will sit before anything is made.

Installation is carried out by our own IPAF and PASMA certified teams, with secure fixings, precise alignment and safe working at height on fascias and building frontages.

Built Up Letters FAQs

  • Built up letters are three-dimensional signage letters fabricated with a face, sides and depth, rather than cut flat from a single sheet. The depth creates shadow and presence, giving a more premium, architectural look than flat lettering, and allows lighting to be built inside.

  • Halo illumination places LEDs behind the letters so light spills onto the wall around them, making each letter appear to float in a glow. It's a subtle, premium effect popular on corporate and hospitality buildings.

  • The most common are aluminium, acrylic and stainless steel, with powder-coated, brushed or polished finishes. We fabricate in-house and will recommend the right material for your building, environment and budget at survey stage.

  • Yes. Our installation teams are IPAF and PASMA certified for safe work at height on fascias, building frontages and elevated positions, with the right access equipment for the site.

  • Fabricated metal and acrylic letters are built for years of outdoor service. Lifespan depends on the material and finish, with powder-coated and stainless options holding their appearance longest in exposed positions. LED illumination is long-life and low maintenance. We'll advise on expected life for your chosen specification at quote stage.
